☀️ Light
-
Needs bright, indirect light — plenty of sun, but avoid harsh midday rays.
-
A few hours of gentle morning or late afternoon sun brings out the best colour.
-
Too much direct sun can bleach or burn the variegation; too little light makes it dull.
-
Indoors, a south or east-facing windowsill is perfect.
💧 Water
-
Water when the soil is completely dry.
-
In spring and summer: roughly every 2–3 weeks.
-
In winter: once every 6–8 weeks, or not at all if it’s cool and dormant.
-
Always water deeply and let excess drain — never leave sitting in water.
-
Overwatering causes root rot very easily, especially in variegated types (they’re more sensitive).
🌡️ Temperature & Dormancy
-
Prefers 20–30°C (68–86°F) during growth.
-
Keep above 12°C (54°F) in winter.
-
A cool, dry rest over winter helps it bloom in spring.
🌱 Soil
-
Needs a very well-draining cactus mix:
-
2 parts cactus compost
-
1 part coarse sand or pumice
-
1 part perlite or grit
-
-
Ensure good airflow around the roots.
🍽️ Feeding
-
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer, diluted to half strength.
-
No fertilizer in autumn or winter.
🌸 Flowering
-
Produces white, pink, or pale yellow blooms in warm months.
-
Blooms best when given plenty of light and a proper winter rest.
⚠️ Variegation Notes
-
Variegated Gymnos often grow slower than regular ones — this is normal.
-
If a green offset appears, remove it if you want to keep the colourful look (green sections can outgrow the variegated parts).
-
Handle gently — the colourful tissue can be more delicate and sun-sensitive.
🪴 Repotting
-
Repot every 2–3 years in spring.
-
Use a shallow pot with good drainage.
