Sansevieria masoniana, commonly known as the "Whale Fin" or "Shark Fin" plant, is known for its large, paddle-shaped leaves and easy care requirements. Here are some tips to keep your Whale Fin healthy:
🪴 Light
-
Thrives in bright, indirect light, but also tolerates low light — just slower growth.
-
Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
💧 Water
-
Let soil dry completely between waterings.
-
In summer: every 2–4 weeks, depending on warmth and humidity.
-
In winter: once every 4–6 weeks or even less.
-
Overwatering is the #1 killer — always check the soil first!
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
-
Ideal range: 18–27°C (65–80°F).
-
Tolerates cooler temps down to 12°C (55°F), but keep away from drafts and cold windows.
-
Normal household humidity is perfect — no misting needed.
🌱 Soil
-
Use a fast-draining mix — cactus/succulent soil works best.
-
You can mix in perlite or pumice for extra drainage.
🍽️ Feeding
-
Feed once a month in spring and summer with a diluted succulent fertilizer.
-
No feed needed in autumn and winter.
⚠️ Common Issues
-
Soft or mushy leaves → overwatering.
-
Wrinkled leaves → too dry for too long (though they’re resilient).
-
Pale or drooping leaves → too little light.
